Bayville Buzz
Unfortunately, I have not been able to be in Bayville recently, as I am down in Florida strengthening my father, so that we can get him to Bayville where he belongs. But don’t worry. Thanks to my embedded covert informants I have the latest scoop on the goings on. Thanks to another Anonymous Columnist!
Has summer arrived? The calendar says so, but it is hard to see through the fog to make a full determination. It is nice to see the mooring field filling up with boats in the water … actually it is just nice to see the water when the fog lifts a little. Boats in the water are a sure sign of summer being here, but the true sign of it being here was the first Spencer Pit of the season this past Saturday night. The warm camaraderie around the fire pushed away any dampness that was in the air. All had a good time, especially Karen Allison who was enjoying “Business Time.”
Liz Bagonzi is enjoying a well-earned rest after working hard to create an enjoyable Windjammers Festival week for the community. Several Bayvillains were spotted at the big Windjammer party at the Chowder House where they had a front seat at the tug-of-war and rock skipping contests. Unfortunately the big fireworks show was more of a Glow Show due to the fog.
Phil Roberts has put his back into so many projects for us over the years, it has finally rebelled. He is currently taking a well needed, but unwanted rest.
Alina Blakesley is preparing to dance her way to Europe and drift gracefully “across the pond.” She will be making a grand tour of several countries with the culmination of her competing in an international ballroom dance competition in Budapest. Good luck Alina!
Reports have been received of smoke drifting from the direction of Lawn Cottage. Not to worry though as it is most likely David Merrill tending his wood burning pizza oven. Best pizza on the peninsula. There may be a little additional smoke coming from the minds of the three Merrill boys too, as they strategize for winning this year’s Friendship Sloop races.
For those who have not made it out to Bayville yet, the big news is all of the activity on Bayville Road as you turn off of Route 96. The barn has been removed, all three back-to-back trailers are gone and the yellow house has been gutted to the studs. Rumors are that there may be a new lawn mower exhibit at the Railway Village as a result of the clean up.
The Fourth began in the usual way, with the annual BIA extravaganza. For the most part, Diana Frascella and Laura Allison kept the overflow crowd under control. The biggest news was that Jill Albaum, after many years of service, stepped down from the role of treasurer. Thank you Jill, for all your work! One project that comes immediately to my mind is her work on the Friendship Rock, a wonderful permanent remembrance to the friends and family who have passed before us. Of course her work on the PickleBall Tournament and Ice Cream Social continue. This year's date is July 29!
Lyn Freundlich was sworn in as the new treasurer and before anyone knew what happened, she had raised membership dues 66%! In reality, the increase had nothing to do with Lyn and the $25 is incredibly reasonable and a wonderful way to support the community. Of course, every cottage needs to belong to have a vote, but it is those cottages that have multiple members that really help Bayville.
Though the forecast was a bit questionable, the weather gods and goddesses cooperated enough for a dry parade sans the band and hot dogs. We all look forward to the band's return next year! You won't have to wait quite so long for the dogs as Spencer, Merrill's et al will be grilling away at the Waterfront Festival on July 29. Yes, July 29 is a big day, so don't miss it! No news yet from the Fire Pit, but the babble juice eventually wins out. Stay tuned!
