A balletic leopard
Dear Editor:
Last week, a writer to our editor warned us that Vice President Kamala Harris will do “exactly the opposite of what she and the Biden administration did in the past.” (Details about this charge are missing — and I would suppose that Right-Wing extremists would welcome this prospect.).
Apparently his preferred candidate, Donald Trump, has never changed and will never change his spots when it comes to issues that are central to the American voting public. To pick just one, a minute’s research into the many different positions he has taken in the abortion debate reveals some astonishing flip-flopping. Here are some of Trump’s ‘immutable’ words and deeds:
“I’m very pro-choice.” (10/24/1999)
“Planned Parenthood has done very good work for millions of American women.” (3/1/2016)
He advocates for and against punishing women who have abortions — within the space of three hours. (3/30/2016)
He signs a memorandum to block funding for Planned Parenthood. (1/23/2016)
“Nobody has ever done more for Right to Life than Donald Trump.” (1/1/23)
“Ron DeSantis did a terrible thing and a terrible mistake” when he enacted Florida’s ban on abortions after 6 weeks. (9/17/2023)
He supports a national abortion ban after 16 weeks. (3/19/2024)
“States will determine by vote or legislation” their policies regarding abortion bans. (4/2/2024)
“My administration will be great for women and their reproductive rights.” (8/23/2024)
It is truly impressive, how Trump has pirouetted so effortlessly, even in his tight, spandex leotard. Let’s hope that, if elected, the ex-president will do exactly the opposite of what he and his administration did in the past.
