Area scouts earn merit badges
On Saturday, Jan. 21, Boy Scout Troop 238 earned their Fingerprinting and Crime Prevention merit badges. The Scouts attended the physical fitness testing for new Lincoln County Sheriff's Department (LCSD) recruits at the Boothbay Region YMCA and visited the Lincoln County Communications Center and learned about their daily operations and the technologies used to provide 911 emergency services for the community.
Troop 238 was then joined by LCSD Detective Jared Mitkus who invited them to the Sheriff's Department for a tour and taught them about law enforcement from the small town police department though the federal level, procedures handling evidence, what type of education is necessary to become a law enforcement officer, the different areas an officer can specialize in (K-9 and internet technology), how crime affects the community, what citizens can do to be safer, and together they did an exercise in fingerprinting. Troop 238 would also like to thank Lt. Rand Maker for organizing their visit.
