Archivist's tips for preserving family photos and documents
Tips for preserving treasured family photos, letters and documents will be offered on Sunday, May 15 at 2 p.m. at the Community Center, Meadow Mall, Boothbay Harbor. The program will be presented by Chuck Rand, a professional archivist and librarian at the United Society of Shakers Sabbathday Lake Community in New Gloucester. He also spends time in New Harbor and serves as the co-president of the Old Bristol Historical Society. In February he gave a similar talk for that Society at the Bristol Congregational Church.
Rand's PowerPoint presentation will cover the factors that cause deterioration to papers, letters, scrapbooks, journals, and photographs. He will suggest specific methods for minimizing deterioration to family keepsakes. Attendees will receive a handout covering essential information and listing sources for preservation materials.
Earlier in his career, Rand was employed by the Maine Historical Society, the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, and the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. He has a bachelor's degree in anthropology and archeology, and a master's in history, both from the University of Maine, and a master's in library science from the University of Maryland.
