The annual traffic island beautification

For about a dozen springs, Jeffrey DiMauro and his East Boothbay Landscaping crew have spent one May morning replanting flowers and greenery on the traffic island on Route 96 near the traffic light on Townsend Avenue.
On Thursday, May 29, DiMauro and his crew were back at it, tearing up the old plants, putting down new loam and fertilizer, and planting a new garden scheme. Joining his crew were three Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens employees.
"We bartered some work with the Botanical Gardens. We did some work for them, and they helped us with planting and a new design for the island," said DiMauro.
The East Boothbay sign on the island also had to be refurbished and rehung after a scooter hit the posts and cracked the sign last summer.
Previous to East Boothbay Landscaping taking over the beautification of the island, motorists stopping beside or driving past the island could only view just a strip of asphalt (painted green) and stone.
