American Legion Post 36
The Yard Sale is fast approaching! Remember, this is our first fundraiser for the Post Henry Rowe Educational Scholarship. Putting on the Post Yard Sale requires a lot of support so first let me go over the plan. The tents go up on the Common on Friday, Aug. 4 if not before. We will start moving all the items stored at the Hall on Friday starting at 10 a.m. Help is needed both at the Hall and at the Common. We will have 12 tables set up under the tent and all items will be arranged appropriately. Volunteers are needed to help in that process. On Aug. 5, Yard Sale Day, volunteers who will be needed on the Common at 6:30 a.m. to finalize the arrangements as items will be continually brought in right up to start time. The Auxiliary will be preparing breakfast sandwiches and the Post will be preparing hot dogs and hamburgers. The Legion will have our tent set up on Boothbay Harbor side of the Common, the Community Tables opposite the Gazebo near the road, and the Craft Fair will set up on the North side of the common. The picnic tables will be in the center. There is plenty of space for everyone so please spread the word and encourage folks to have a table and join the Yard Sale. We can’t have too many participating Yard Sales on the Common! The schedule is on our website, www.post36maine.org.
The 36ers are wrapping up their first season! For those who have been able to attend some of the games, you know the caliber of players in Legion baseball. Since this was the first year for Legion baseball in the area, and since players come from all over the Midcoast from as far away as Rockland and Lisbon, it was the first time some of players have ever met, much less played together. After only two practices, the games started. Legion baseball is for players between the ages of 16 and 19. We had a few players who graduated from high school and are moving on, but most of the players are 16. So, next year, we will have a much more seasoned team. The weather didn’t help either. Since games were cancelled they had to be made up by having a number of doubleheaders. Since these are evening games and since some are as far away as Skowhegan, it made for late evenings. They are evening games because many of the players have day jobs Doubleheaders on away games means many of the players didn’t get home until midnight and then have to go to work the next day! So, you can see how dedicated these players are to the game.
The next Veteran Support Group is July 27, next breakfast July 30, and next meeting is Aug. 14.
