American Legion Post 36

Mon, 06/05/2023 - 10:45am

As has been mentioned in previous articles, and will be repeated periodically until the event, the Legion Community Yard sale is Saturday, Aug. 5. It will be held on Boothbay Common this year which should attract a great turnout. Besides having the Post Yard Sale tables, the community is invited to set up their own tables. The Post will offer the 10-foot by 20-foot piece of beautiful Boothbay Common grass for just $25. The “profits” from the yard sale will be used to support our Rowe Educational Scholarship and, perhaps, other Post programs. For those donating to the Post Yard Sale tables, you can deliver your items at any time to the Post. There is room in the plastic shed and the new “tent garage” in the back of the Hall. If you need help bringing things to the Hall, call the Hall and we can arrange a pick-up time. This year we will not accept bedding or books. If you have used books, I suggest you bring them to the used book store. Or, you can set up your own table to sell them for just $25, what a deal!

Saturday, Oct. 28 will be the annual Post Awards dinner. If you know of an organization or an individual you think should be honored at this year’s dinner, contact the Legion leadership or call the Hall and make the nomination. You can contact the Legion leadership by going to our website (www.post36maine.org), the officers are listed with their contract information. There will be awards to individuals both within the Legion family and in the community as well as organizations that have gone above and beyond serving our community. Last year we awarded our Boothbay Harbor Police Department, the Lincoln County Sheriff Department, Big Al Cohen, and Ralph Smith. There are so many worthwhile individuals and organizations that do so much for our community, it is always difficult to select who should be the awardee this year. But, to be considered, they have to be nominated, so this is your chance to ensure someone and/or an organization is/are nominated.

A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned that the Post will be hosting a veteran support group every other Thursday. We have modified that now by saying the meetings will be held the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month. The next Group session will be June 8 at 6 p.m. This is not an organized therapy session, just some fellow veterans getting together to share thoughts. Whether you are a combat veteran or someone who contributed in other ways but never left the states, you are welcome. It is a great opportunity to share thoughts and opinions without judgement. Just come, listen and have a snack. I’ll guarantee, even if you don’t share, you will leave the meeting feeling better.

The next Post meeting is June 12 with dinner at 5:30 p.m., and the next breakfast June 18.
