American Legion Post 36

One of the great things about having been in the military is that from the time you rose your right hand and swore allegiance to this country, you became one of the less than 10% who made this commitment, you joined a band of brothers and sisters who paved the way for all of us to enjoy the freedoms of this great country. When you meet a fellow veteran, you automatically share a common bond. But we also come from all walks of life, dissimilar backgrounds, different experience both in the military and out, different views of life, and yes, different political persuasions. We are all individuals and have come through our experiences differently and, at times, can make life challenging.

For veterans that are having a difficult time, getting professional help is available at the VA. But, for others, just talking to other veterans can be a great help. After the difficulties veterans experienced coming home after Vietnam, the VA created the Vet Centers where veterans could get peer counseling without the need to see mental health professionals at the VA hospitals. Some of us at the Post have been part of veteran support groups and found that sharing things with our fellow brothers and sisters in a safe environment, a place where you can talk freely without judgement, where you knew and trusted what was discussed and said at these support sessions stayed within the group and would not be shared with the VA or anyone else, was extremely beneficial.

But there isn’t such a support group for veterans within an hour drive of Boothbay. So, to remedy that, the Post will host a veteran support group every other week, on Thursday at 6 p.m. starting on May 25. This group is open to all veterans no matter when or where you served. Veterans of all ages who never left the country or veterans who served in combat zones are welcome. This is just an opportunity to share what is on your mind today and may or may not have anything to do with your service time ... in fact, in my experience, most conversations within “groups” are not focused on military experiences at all. Even if you aren’t inclined to “share,” come and enjoy the camaraderie of your fellow veterans. Rumor has it coffee and cookies will be available!

Memorial Day is fast approaching. This is the day we remember our fallen! We remember them in our hearts, no matter where we are. We can also remember them by being on the side of the road watching your brothers and sisters “march” by. Or, remember them by actually being in the parade. Yes, we are recognized for our service by our friends and neighbors as we march by, but we represent our brothers and sisters who are no longer with us. What better way to spend Memorial Day then being part of it. More next week.

The next Legion breakfast is May 21.
