American Legion Post 36

Mon, 06/17/2019 - 2:30pm

We continue to have great support for our breakfasts. It is great to see the Hall full of folks enjoying the “all you can eat” breakfast, seeing old friends, and making new. The whole hall is vibrantly alive, a happy place to be on an early Sunday morning. The next breakfast is June 30. There is always room for more!

Windjammer Days starts this Sunday, June 23 and ending Saturday, June 29. The American Legion will once again have our parade float but rumor has it that you might see other float(s) from the American Legion family joining it. This is always a fun event and the community support for our military and veteran families through supporting our Legion is greatly appreciated. Any veteran who wants to join in and work with the Legion float(s) are more than welcome. And, to celebrate a successful Windjammer Day Week, the Legion will have a great breakfast that Sunday.

This Sunday, the Mid-Coast Promotions has rented the Hall for their 2019 Gun Show. The Show runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 22 and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 23. The Sons of the Legion will be running the concession stand as a fundraiser for their new “squadron.”

On June 11, Governor Janet Mills signed into law (Public Law 885) which states that the state of Maine will “Adopt Eastern Daylight Time Year-round.” Don’t get excited yet ... there are two caveats, one is that the federal law permits the year-round observation of eastern daylight time; and the other that all the states in the eastern time zone and the District of Columbia observe eastern daylight time year-round.

There are two bills that have passed the House and Senate and are going to Appropriations that affect the property tax exemption for veterans. LD 163 provides veterans who served 90 days or more in a Combat Zone with a $25,000 property tax exemption, if the veteran is 50 to 90% disabled, the tax exemption goes up to $50,000, and for 100% disabled, the exemption is $100,000. The other bill is LD1194. This bill increasing the property tax exemption for those who served during a war time period to $10,000; and adds to the war time period Feb. 1955 to Feb. 1961. If you support these two Legislative Documents, let our Representative and Senator know we need their support during the Appropriations process.

The next meeting of the Post, Auxiliary, and Sons is Monday, July 8; dinner (optional) at 5:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 6.
