American Legion Post 36

Tue, 04/16/2019 - 7:15am

The Induction Ceremony scheduled on April 8 for all new Legion members was postponed due to the weather. This ceremony will now be held at our next meeting May 13. The good news is that we will likely have a few more new members to be officially brought into the Legion. This ceremony will remind all members why you joined the Legion; so, if you haven’t been to a meeting in a while, this would be a great meeting to attend.

We will also be nominating and electing officers at the May meeting. Any member who would like to be nominated for an office or want to nominate another member, let David Patch know.

The Sons of the Legion “Squadron” Charter has been applied for to be incorporated into Charles E. Sherman Jr. Post 36. The Sons is open to all sons, grandsons, great-grandsons of veterans. Even those who are in the Legion now as members of the Post are also eligible to be in the Sons if you are sons or grandsons of veterans. Dual membership is welcome. With the Sons joining our Auxiliary, we now have the full American Legion family here on the Boothbay peninsula. At the May 13 meeting, officers for the new squadron will be elected. For additional information, contact David Patch.

We are only a little more than a month away for Memorial Day. All veterans are encouraged to “march” with your fellow veterans, uniforms not required. As always, for those not able to march, the trolley will be available. We will have at least one new addition to this year’s parade, a float dedicated to our fallen comrades. All organizations who would like to remember and honor those who died in active military service are encouraged to join us. Just contact David Patch to be added to the parade.

Just a reminder, on Saturday, June 8, the Legion will host a VA seminar. The leadership of the VA will be covering a number of topics including: eligibility for healthcare, services available for the elderly, how to file a claim for a service connected medical issue, financial assistance, Medicare/Medicaid vs VA healthcare, assisted living and nursing home care for veterans, resolving medical bills involving private care and VA care, availability of emergency financial aid for veterans, and how to obtain private sector healthcare that is funded by the VA. The new Mission Act which expands VA funded private healthcare will be explained. The seminar will be held from 9 till noon. Attendees are invited to remain after the seminar to have personal questions answered and for veterans in the healthcare system to register for “MyHealthyVet” and “eBenefits.”

The May 13 meeting will include dinner at 5:30 p.m., followed by the meeting at 6. Guests are always welcome!
