American Legion Post 36: Fundraiser Aug. 30 for local family

Mon, 08/10/2020 - 10:30am

Many in the community are aware of our local family that are dealing with their son’s, Jesse, serious medical issues. Jesse is 8 years young fighting a rare form of leukemia. While their insurance is taking care of most of the medical expenses, there are a significant amount of other expenses that are taking a toll. They have to make multiple trips to hospitals and doctor visits, sometimes with stays away from home. Jesse has a brother and a sister which complicates the logistics issue. Car issues resulting in driving to Scarborough multiple times a week, special diet needs, overnight stays when needed, and much more are exceeding their financial situation. Our Post will be having a fundraising brunch on Sunday, Aug. 30 at the Legion Hall from 8 to 11 a.m. The suggestion donation for the brunch is $10. All the money raised will go to the family. So, please join us on that Sunday and enjoy our regular breakfast and much, much more.

Speaking of fundraisers, since before Memorial Day, COVID-19 protection masks have been sold around town with the money going to the American Legion. Patty Minerich, an American Legion Auxiliary member, and her family are producing these masks and donating the materials as well. They recognized that without the ability to rent the Hall due to the pandemic, the Post, like many businesses, is struggling to pay the bills. And, of course, the Legion mission is to serve our military, veterans, and the community and financial resources necessary to do that. Thanks to the Minerich family, and the community for buying the masks, we are meeting our current needs. So, please, when you see these masks being sold, in adult and youth sizes, please buy a few for you, your family, and your friends.

People are starting to think about having small events again. Of course, the current restrictions are for no more than 50 people and those 50 people need to follow certain guidelines. There are very few venues in the area where you can have such an event safely, but the Legion Hall is one of them. We demonstrate that at each of our breakfasts. This 3,000-square-foot open Hall provides ample social distancing space for 50 people. With the new sound system, four large screen TVs, WiFi and cable, it is the perfect venue for anniversaries, birthdays, receptions, and other events. And, with the large outdoor space, the event can expand outside with outdoor speakers allowing the music to heard over the entire premise. Please give us a call at the Hall, 633-4487, and see if we can start the process of safely returning to celebrating important events.

Remember to mark you calendar for the Aug. 30 Jesse Fundraiser Brunch.
