Accident waiting to happen

Mon, 09/19/2022 - 3:00pm

    Dear Editor:

It is time for an additional stop sign at the corner of Oak and McKown streets in Boothbay Harbor to allow cars coming from Oak Street to safely get across the McKown/Townsend intersection.

During the popular summer months that now extend from May to October, the stop sign between Dirty Birds Pottery and the Library lawn can be a really dangerous spot to be in. The driver who wants to proceed across the intersection to Townsend and shops beyond has to pay attention to activity on the Library lawn, three crossing areas, and the one way traffic coming from McKown to Townsend that has the right of way.

As traffic has increased, one often has to wait at the stop sign for quite a while before finally get a break in traffic (a godsend) or a pedestrian crossing McKown to or from the Library.

In a small town like Boothbay Harbor this may sound silly, but it is an accident waiting to happen.
