Absentee ballots available until Oct. 28

Southport, Boothbay Harbor, Boothbay and Edgecomb residents have until 5 p.m. Oct. 28 to apply for absentee ballots. Applications to receive ballots by mail are available on the State of Maine website and through town offices by phone, online or in person. Ballots can also be collected in person at the town offices. Applications are not necessary for registered voters voting early and in person.

The deadline for handing in ballots is 8 p.m. Nov. 2. Ballots can be mailed back to the town offices or handed in to the town clerks during their business hours. Boothbay Harbor residents can use the drop-box outside the 11 Howard St. town office entrance. Voters are advised to plan ahead for requesting and returning ballots since all ballots received after 8 p.m. Nov. 2, even if postmarked before deadline, will not be counted. There will be no local initiatives up for a vote in any of the four towns.

The ballot consists of three questions: Question 1, a citizen initiative, asks voters if they want to ban construction of high-impact transmission lines in upper Kennebec; require the legislature to sign off on similar projects retroactively to 2020; and require the legislature approve similar projects using public land by a two-thirds majority retroactively to 2014. A “yes” vote rejects the ongoing Central Maine Power corridor project and gives the legislature authority over such projects. A “no” vote allows the project to continue.

Question 2, a bond issue, asks voters if they want to issue a $100,000,000 bond for transportation improvements including roads, bridges, rail, airports, facilities and ports to access $253,000,000 in federal funds.

Question 3, a constitutional amendment, asks if voters want to establish a “natural, inherent and unalienable right to grow, raise, harvest, produce and consume the food of their own choosing for their own nourishment, sustenance, bodily health and well-being.”

Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor town office hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; Edgecomb, Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.; and Southport, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday.
