River Arts in Damariscotta is featuring a group show in the River Room,“4 Artists 4 Stories,” running from Feb. 2 through March 1. This colorful show brings four pleasing points of view together for a delightful display. An artist’s reception will be on Saturday, Feb. 25 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Cheryl Young says, “Art tells a story. I combine my love of drawing, color, and nature to make art and the tale is usually about animals.” Growing up in rural Brunswick, Young helped raise domestic animals and watched wild creatures. Feeling a strong empathetic connection to animals, Young finds drawing them fascinating. She tells her stories in colored pencil, ink and watercolor pencil.

After working in watercolor to create realistic subjects for a number of years, Karen Nadeau began experimenting with acrylic paint several years ago. Her explorations into abstract imagery are created with a love of the vivid colors of liquid acrylics. Nadeau enjoys the often unplanned outcome that appears in her method of painting.

Colleen White says, “I grew up in Maine and I can’t escape the influence of our southern coastal region on my work. I am proud to say I am a regional landscape artist. I paint mostly in oil and sometimes in acrylic or watercolor. There is so much beauty in Maine; I paint to honor what’s around us before it is lost forever.”

Of her delightful paintings Deborah Shappelle says, “In these watercolor and acrylic paintings, I am trying to capture a sense of place and time. The landscapes are summer in midcoast Maine, a happy break from February’s grey. A still life shows the first narcissus in an early winter scene. I am drawn to the details and reflections in water and glass hoping to capture the moment realistically.”

River Arts is located at 36 Elm St. in Damariscotta. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information call the gallery at 563-6868 or visit the website riverartsme.org.
