Westward moves, but not out of Boothbay Harbor yet

The plans for the F/V Westward, the old fishing vessel that has been moored in Boothbay Harbor for the last two years, remain fluid as of Monday, Jan. 19.

U.S. Coast Guard Sector Northern New England Lt. Scott McCann reported the Westward was moved off the Coast Guard mooring and back to the larger Boothbay Harbor Shipyard mooring on Saturday after a cleanup operation.

“The Coast Guard's foremost interest is the safety of the public, the port and the environment. To mitigate the possible environmental concerns posed by fishing vessel Westward, the Coast Guard contracted Clean Harbors to remove, to the fullest extent possible, all oil and hazardous materials aboard the vessel,” McCann wrote in an email. “This clean-up operation occurred (Saturday, Jan. 17), as did the movement of fishing vessel Westward to a more secure mooring at Boothbay Harbor Shipyard.

“The vessel's owner remains responsible for arranging a permanent mooring, and is in contact with Boothbay Harbor Shipyard regarding the final disposition of the fishing vessel Westward.”

Where the Westward will end up once it leaves the harbor is presently unknown. McCann said via telephone that shipyards in Portland that Sheehy had hoped to move the Westward to have not agreed to accept the vessel.

“We are still working to figure out where the Westward will go,” McCann said.
