My sincere appreciation is directed to those people responsible for last week's expression of thanks for public service ("Palmer Payne receives 'Spirit of America' award") and to those others who have responded to the announcement.

It would be a nice thing if more folks would become involved in volunteer activities. It is not necessary to run for office or to join an organization to help others. Vacancies exist on town government committees and many private organizations are in need of a little of your spare time. The simple act of offering to give a neighbor a ride to a medical appointment or to pick up some groceries for folks who cannot drive can bring happiness to the helper as well as the person or group assisted.
