This Monday morning, the two swimmers jumped into the icy water without a moment of hesitation. We are pleased to welcome Sofia Moen to the morning class. Charlotte Mazza took her test for next year and we look forward to seeing her then.

This week, four 420s and six Optis took the trip to Portland for the Junior Olympic Sailing Regatta, hosted by Sail Maine. There was lovely sailing weather the first day, allowing the sailors to spend the whole day on the water; however, the storms on the second day prevented the boats from going out. We were proud to see Southport’s results. Out of the 36 participating 420s, Sally Apolinsky and Tessa Houston placed 11th, David Turley and Maddie Gaudette placed 10th, Nuala Spillane and Annie Britton placed 8th, and Max Freund and Jen Killian placed 6th. Southport also sent six Optis to partake in the event. In a fleet of over 40 boats, Tia Freund, Bryce Jacobs and Charlie Apolinsky all sailed well and were tough competitors. Dane Phippen took 9th, Blake Erhard finished 7th, and we are proud to announce that Andrew Turley got 1st place overall, winning the Opti fleet.

While racers were away at the Junior Olympics, Southport had two rainy days. Instead of sailing, students partook in a few indoor activities, including a Talent Show. We had a variety of acts such as ballet, singing, gymnastics, Irish dancing, instructor impersonations, and even ear wiggling. The rest of the week was filled with lovely days of sailing.

We hope this week has better weather and we look forward to seeing everyone at the Ice Cream Social at 7 p.m. on Thursday evening.
