Southport Column: Souper Bowl, Climate Action Team and more

Mon, 01/29/2024 - 8:15am

February is on the way, so it’s time to announce that the Souper Bowl is returning to Southport Town Hall on Saturday, Feb. 10 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., hosted by the Southport Library Aides and the Southport Island Association. It will again kick off an age-old tradition, interrupted by Covid for several years – a community soup potluck to warm your bellies and your hearts. Bring a soup to share, or just bring your appetite! Join your friends and neighbors for a wholesome lunch and great company. All are welcome at this free community event. Toss a Tupperware or two in your backseat because at the end of the event you just may get the chance to score a bonus serving of your favorite soup for a donation of any size.

If you are interested in volunteering to help on the day of, or are able to bring a soup, please visit the Southport Island Association’s Facebook page or contact us through southportislandassociation@gmail.com. If you are unable to transport your soup to the town hall, pick-up can be arranged. See you there!

Southport Climate Action Team update: The Southport Climate Action Team needs to hear from Southport residents who have experienced salt-water intrusion or declining water in their wells, in order to inform a grant application. We request that anyone who has experienced this, please contact Ashley at the Town Office ASAP at 633-3318. Some residents have already reported to the town. This grant addresses year-round drinking water extension. The deadline is Feb. 5.

Southport Central School update: Grades K/1: Students used reading skills to match scavenger hunt pictures with corresponding words, and math skills to create and measure long pieces of paper. Grade 2: Students learned how to use a thesaurus on a computer. Grades 4/5/6: In math class, students worked to understand ratios. PS: Everyone has been having fun on the new ice rink!

Southport Library update: Rick Dickinson is continuing his art show at the Southport Library through February. He is bringing his “Year In the Gut” paintings to the library this month. Having these paintings exhibited in our library gives all residents of Southport a chance to see Rick’s plein air paintings of Townsend Gut. Not sure what plein air is? Check Google for the definition or better still, come to the library to see and learn.
