Southport Column: Clean-up event and more

Wed, 04/26/2017 - 11:15am

You will love this … remember the Annual SIA Island Clean-up Event is this weekend. The date is Sunday, April 30 from noon to 2 p.m. Everyone gathers at the Southport Town Hall and there he is … Chef Gerry Gamage at the grill with the hot dogs and other goodies … BUT the bonus is there will be a corn chowder too … the chef at Oliver’s, Mike Nguyen, has offered to have some chowder for those workers … surely an incentive for islanders to join the clean-up crew that day. After the lunch, you pick up the provided garbage bags, sign up for a street or road, and off you go. The filled bags are left roadside and the town crew will pick up. You may want to wear boots and bring work gloves.

The Southport Memorial Library welcomes a new Artist of the Month for May and June. Bob Thomas is a painter, photographer and collagist who lives in Edgecomb with his wife the author Lea Wait. The library will have an artist’s reception with wine and cheese on Thursday evening, May 4 from 7 to 9 p.m..

Watch for Lea Wait to be the featured author for the Library’s “Author Talks” on June 8 at the library at 7. She is a well-known Maine author of historical novels, children’s stories for ages 7 and up, as well as the Shadow Antiques Print Mystery series and the Mainely Needlepoint Mystery Series.

Checking in at the Town office, Donna Climo wants all boaters to be aware that the mooring invoices (with a new format) were mailed this week and are due to the harbor master Jim Gagnon by June 1.

Island life gets stirring as the feeling of some warmth and a bit of welcome spring weather appears. That means the Southport Gift Barn is getting many deliveries of new items … cards, scarves, new bags, jewelry, new T-shirts, new books … watch for the opening the last part of May (you will love it, of course).

The Hendricks Hill Museum will be opening soon for the season and they always welcome new volunteers and docents. If you have any interest, please contact volunteer coordinator Nan Jackson at 633-2003. Last year there were 306 visitors from 21 states plus New Zealand, Poland and Germany. Plan a visit this summer … it is always enlightening and informative to witness our island history and view the books, artifacts, photos, furniture, boats and historical memorabilia. You will enjoy and remember “when.”
