Richard A. Nolon Sr.

Richard Austin Nolon Sr., 76, died at home on February 22, 2014.

He was born to the late Emma Campbell-Munsey on February 3, 1938 in Boothbay.

Richard grew up in Boothbay and attended Boothbay schools. When he was 17 years old, he joined the Navy. He served for 20 years, and was stationed in California, Florida, Hawaii, Rhode Island, Greece, Italy and Vietnam. In 1967, he married his sweetheart, Mary Gross; they raised a family in Boothbay and were married for 46 years.

After retiring from the Navy in 1973, he spent several years as a lobsterman before accepting a position at Bath Iron Works, where he worked for 20 years before retiring in 1998.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, reading, meeting his friends for breakfast, and he never missed his beloved Boston Red Sox or New England Patriots. He was an animal lover and brought home several surprise puppies over the years. He was a member of VFW Post #3475 where he served as commander for several terms.

He was predeceased by his mother, Emma Campbell-Munsey, and several aunts and uncles.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; sons, Robert Nolon and Richard Nolon Jr.; daughter, Julie Nolon; grandchildren, Daniel, Heather, Robbie, Rebecca and Erin; five great-grandchildren; brothers, Lorance “Ted” Thomas and John Thomas; sister, Jane Brewer; aunt, Janet Campbell; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Family and friends are invited to gather at Simmons, Harrington and Hall, Route 27, Boothbay on Wednesday, March 5 from 6 until 8 p.m. A funeral service at the same location will follow on Thursday, March 6 at 1 p.m. with the interment at Oak Lawn Cemetery, Route 96, Boothbay.
