Remote snow days?

Mon, 12/04/2023 - 2:45pm

Dear Editor:

Last Wednesday, Nov. 29, most of our teachers at Boothbay Region High School informed us about an alternative to snow days, from the superintendent. Now, the teachers have also said that this is a “pilot” course, so if it works for a year or two, it’ll become official policy.

Instead of having snow days, which will prolong the school year well into summer, we have remote learning days. Just like the COVID-19 pandemic, we students went remote online for lessons.

I’ve been thinking about it, and I’ve identified a pro and a con. One pro: The school schedule will likely end on the planned last day of school. A con: since some students likely do not care about their studies, having remote learning days may just make them annoyed.

Already, there are mixed reviews, and that’s only from some students. What would the community say?
