Recognized ‘Bob’s bird’
Dear Editor:
I thought I recognized the “small heron” in Bob Mitchell’s photo (June 16 issue) as one I had seen frequently when I was in Florida, but I looked it up in my bird book to be sure.
It is a black crowned night heron and is usually nocturnal but can be seen occasionally roosting in trees. I does not travel in flocks like the ibis or egrets, but is usually alone and is rather shy.
The night heron has a wide range of habitat but usually spends the winters in southern United States. I am really surprise that Bob saw one here.
