Ramblers edge Boothbay, 1-0, in regional semifinal
The second best field hockey season in Boothbay Region High School’s history came to a close as the fourth-seeded Winthrop-Maranacook Ramblers defeated the top-seeded Seahawks, 1-0, on Perkins Field, BRHS Saturday afternoon, Nov. 1 in a tournament semifinal of Class C South.
The lone goal was scored by Sophie Shuman with 9:54 to play in the fourth quarter.
The Seahawks had some chances to score in the final minutes, battling for the ball in front of the cage, but couldn’t get the ball past Rambler goalie Cyara Harriman, who had 16 saves in the game.
Boothbay outshot Winthrop, 12 to 8, and led in penalty corners, 10 to 4. Seahawk goalie Jess Steinmetz had five saves.
The loss gave the Seahawks a final record of 12-2-2, only one less victory than the 2017 team.
Winthrop improved to 10-5 and, in the regional final scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 5 in Yarmouth, will face third-seeded Spruce Mountain, who defeated second-seeded Lisbon, 1-0, on Nov. 1.
Boothbay had defeated the Ramblers in Winthrop during the regular season, 2-1. Also, Lisbon had defeated Spruce Mountain, 2-1, during the regular season but both the higher seeds fell in the semifinals. Spruce Mountain defeated Winthrop at home, 2-0, during the regular season.
