Public hearing scheduled for Thompson’s bridge project on Southport

Southport selectmen have received a request from the Maine Department of Transportation to use the town hall on Aug. 30 at 6 p.m. for a public hearing about the future replacement of Thompson’s bridge.

According to Leanne Timberlake, project manager for the DOT, “It’s early in the process. We’re just starting to gather information to see what will work.”

Timberlake explained that the project is not scheduled for bidding and construction until the spring of 2018. However, she pointed out, “We need to look at options. At the meeting, we’d like to hear from the public about any concerns they may have.” She said public input will help the project’s designers plan for construction issues like maintaining traffic and routes for any detours.

Among the information Timberlake and her colleagues hope to learn is use of the bridge by pedestrians, bicyclists and hikers, accident histories, flooding and boating concerns.

According to information Timberlake provided to the Register, Thompson’s bridge was constructed in 1933 and is made of steel girders with an open steel grid deck and timber piers and abutments.  There are four spans which measure about 196’ in total length and the width of the bridge is 21 feet. The bridge is used on average 1,370 times each day.

Timberlake further explained, “The bridge has been programmed for replacement. The project is currently funded for $2.7 million, which includes pre-construction engineering, right-of-way, construction, and construction engineering.”

In other business from the selectmen’s meeting, Eric Wood Construction was awarded the town’s contract to supply sand during the coming months. Wood’s bid was $14.50 per yard for 400 yards. Unsuccessful bidder for the sand was Hagar Enterprises, which bid $14.75 per yard.
