Planning board approves oyster house application

The Edgecomb Planning Board unanimously approved an application on Sept. 18 for a new oyster house in the town.

The board’s decision paves the way for Bremen businesswoman Tonie Simmons to purchase an Old Ring Point Road property to relocate her oyster harvesting operation. The sale is contingent upon receiving planning board approval, according to attorney Peter Drum who represented the applicant.

Simmons operates Muscongus Bay Aquaculture in Bremen, but wants to relocate the entire operation to Edgecomb. Simmons anticipates the move will make her oyster harvesting and distribution business more efficient. She plans on operating 2-3 days a week and plans to employ 3-5 people in Edgecomb.

Margaret Schuler currently owns the 10.86 acre property. A pier is the only structure on the property.

While the current pier will not be part of the operation, Drum said, Simmons plans on constructing a commercial pier for business purposes. Other plans include constructing an oyster house and a barn to house and repair equipment. Simmons plans on calling the new venture Ring Point, LLC.

During the public hearing no one opposed the plan. Simmons and Drum both attended the meeting. After the meeting, both declined to comment about the pending land sale or when the business would be operational.
