‘Round Town

People from away

September in Boothbay Harbor may be the prettiest month of the year. The humidity is gone, the air is clear, nights are cool and the days are often sunny and warm.

The summer visitors have thinned down to a minimum, a lot of the businesses are cleaning up and getting ready to close for the winter and the town is quiet and peaceful.

Some people visit in September to enjoy the solitude and beauty of the area that year-round residents enjoy at this time of year.

Here are a few of the PFAs (people from away) who were in town last Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 19-20.

Richard Steer and Susan Carlson, from Southport, Conn., were here to celebrate their fourth anniversary. They had been taking a trip through Maine and stopped in Boothbay Harbor for two days. On Wednesday they were biking through town, headed to the Botanical Gardens. While here they stayed at Bayberry House.

“We love it here,” Steer said. “The people are wonderful.”

Terry and Linda Pettit from Cincinnati, Ohio were here celebrating their 30th anniversary. They had flown in to Boston, Mass., where they rented a car and drove to Newport, R.I., and then up to Boothbay Harbor. It was their first time here and they said they were having a great time.

Scott and Kathy Wilson live in Portland, where they own an antiquarian book store. They said they've been to Boothbay Harbor many times, but Kathy's sister, Barbara Nielson from Salt Lake City, Utah, was on her first visit to the area. They were headed up to the Boathouse Bistro for tapas.

Ken and Marge Szaroleta were here from Kemblesville, Pa. They come every September for a week or so and stay at the Greenleaf Inn.

“We love it there,” he said. “It is our home away from home, and our seventh stay there.”

The couple said that while they are here they like dining at Kaler's, Robinson's Wharf and Rocktide Inn.

Denny and Elaine Thomas were here vacationing for two days with Elaine's brother, David Porter, and his wife, Jane. The two couples are from Vermont. This was the Porters first time in the harbor. The Thomases said they come most Septembers and stay at the Tugboat Inn.

“We can walk everywhere,” said Elaine Thomas. “And it's hard to beat the view over the harbor.”

Bill and Marsha Collins were in town from Versailles, Ky. This is their third time in Boothbay Harbor. They said they enjoyed this time of year in Maine because it's “cooler and nicer, and there are fewer people.”

“And good sales,” she said.

Gene and Terry Fiset, from Ormond Beach, Fla., were eating ice cream outside the Ice Cream Factory while their dog, Annie, waited patiently for a hand-out. They were traveling with their travel trailer and planning a long, leisurely trip back to Florida, taking about a month for stops and visits with friends.

Michael Bowman and Pamela Watkins hail from Indianapolis and Ureka Springs, Ark. Watkins said that Boothbay Harbor reminds her of home. “It is a touristy (Victorian) town in the Ozark Mountains.” The couple said they were up in the air about where to go for a vacation when a friend offered them his cabin in South Bristol.

“He said, ‘Go and stay there for a week.’” And they did. They were in the harbor for the day.

Take some time to stop and talk to our visitors from away. They’re here because they love our town. They probably have stories about their own towns they’ll be happy to share.
