Ocean Point Column: The storm, OPCT and condolences

Mon, 02/05/2024 - 10:30am

We are finally through what I find to be the longest month of the year, January! We always seem to have the stormiest weather during this month and as we all know this year was no exception.

I’m sure all of you were as horrified as I seeing the devastation not only at Ocean Point and the surrounding community but the entire coastline of Maine. Thankfully there didn’t appear to be any physical injuries from the storm but unfortunately there was severe damage to homes, businesses and roadways; the cleanup will be a long and difficult one, especially along Shore Road. Due to the incredible effort of the Boothbay road crew Shore Road is now passable. From the many photos I’ve seen they have done an amazing job in such a very short period of time. We are so grateful for their outstanding dedication and hard work, thank you!

I was also happy that many of the businesses that were under water downtown are now reopened. I imagine this spring will be a busy one for many preparing and repairing all of the damage that occurred.

Recently our president Paul Taylor sent an informational letter explaining the function of the OPCT organization. If you have questions regarding the OPCT please reach out to Paul for assistance. Paul can be reached at taylorsp2@gmail.com. Vice President Kelly Robbins is heading up an outreach committee and is looking for those interested in joining her. Kelly also sent an email describing the goals of this committee along with some ideas on achieving them. Please contact Kelly if you are interested in participating at kellyrobbins@gmail.com.

It is with great sadness that I write of the passing of long time Ocean Pointer James”Jimmy” Boyd. Jim passed away on Jan. 1 after a long illness. Jimmy grew up summering at Ocean Point along with his parents and siblings. I have many wonderful memories of Jim as a teenager enjoying all the Ocean Point activities. Jim was always so kind and thoughtful to his Ocean Point friends and developed a close relationship with them through the years. Jimmy bravely served his country joining the Army in 1967 at quite a young age. His Ocean Point friends certainly admired his courage and his spirit in doing so. Jim married his wife Judi and began a successful career in business. He continued to summer at Ocean Point and enjoyed spending time with his family and siblings. All who knew and loved Jim will surely miss him. Our condolences to his wife Judith, his sons Brendan and Dana and his daughter Caitlin Blanchette and his granddaughter Audrey. Jim is also survived by his siblings Garry, Donna Acquaviva, Kathy Boyd and Stephen Boyd. Jim was predeceased by his brother Tom. Donations in Jim’s memory can be made to the Recreation Department at the Edith Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital https:/www.pay.gov/public/form/entry/102/52253675.

Have a great week!
