Ocean Point Column: Final days of summer

Fri, 08/29/2014 - 9:45am

Despite the fact that many Ocean Pointers are now leaving for the season, there still continues to be lots of visitors here enjoying our incredible weather. I personally will appreciate and savor these days, as the Farmer’s Almanac has published its upcoming winter weather report!

Many Ocean Pointers will be returning for the holiday weekend. Among those returning will be Meredith McFall’s Ocean Point friends to witness her nuptials on Sunday, Aug. 31. Congratulations and best wishes to Meredith and her fiancé Jim Kerr.

The weather has also been ideal for golfing; the Boothbay Harbor Country Club is now fully operational. The Clamshell Open was held Aug. 16, and Dick Nolan was this year’s winner. Other winners included Mike Anderson with low gross and Matt Lindley with the longest drive. Dick Nolan also won closest to the pin. Congratulations to all. Thanks to Will Bertrand for organizing a great tournament and to the country club for a wonderful lunch. Congratulations as well to all the Ocean Point golfers who competed in the member guest tournament at the club last week.

The Rev. Garvey MacLean will conduct the final services of the season on Sunday, Aug. 31. Rev. MacLean is a graduate of Boston University School of Theology and was ordained to ministry in the United Church of Christ. Rev. MacLean then went on to serve parishes in Massachusetts and Maine, became an assistant professor of Theology at Bates College, and served as its first chaplain. While at Bates he became involved in theatre arts and managed the summer theatre there. Rev. MacLean returned to parish ministry when asked to lead worship at the Maine conference of the United Church of Christ and proceeded to serve parishes in Portland Maine and Illinois. He has an Ocean Point connection in Jack and Marilyn Heise. Rev. MacLean his wife Nancy and their family now reside in Scarborough.

Dianne Eakins is excited to have her brothers Steve and Denny here visiting along with Denny’s son, Rob and Dianne’s daughter Debi; they are enjoying visiting all their favorite places around the region. Dianne also had the opportunity to stop and visit with Judy Dawson in Hallowell.

Special thanks to Allen and Sally Johnson for maintaining the beautiful flowers and flower boxes around the Casino grounds this summer and to David and Alison Butterworth for the playground area.

If you happen to be leaving for home in the next few weeks, please consider donating to the Food Pantry. Have a great week!
