No to Route 27 plan

Dear Editor:

Thank you to all the thinking, inquiring readers who have expressed questioning thoughts concerning a proposed solution to a supposed dangerous, confusing traffic situation that we are being told exists at the Common area of Boothbay Center — the Route 27 Redevelopment Plan.

Are there any statistics on incidents that have occurred there since the time the intersecting roads at the monument became a four-way stop?

For three to four months there is a longer wait sometimes getting to where one needs to be to continue traveling but is this so serious a problem to require the dismantling, excavation and disruption that such a project would require and then not even be necessary for the majority months of the year?

Comments have been expressed about a “roundabout” attracting young families to take up residency and somehow the regional economy is going to improve. Is there any unbiased survey information available to show that this is any more than supposition and conjecture? Ambition is to be admired but an entire community is being asked to resolve a situation that may have been created in the first place by the lack of consideration for traffic patterns at the Center, in the entrance to the golf course having been changed from the less traveled Country Club Road.

I find the film “Field of Dreams” delightful entertainment. But to think that “If you build it, they will come” is not sufficient justification to risk further loss of what remains as the character and gateway to our village.

Has accessibility of any kind been a hindrance to attracting feasible business development. Having a roundabout considered to be a factor in attracting young families to become year-round residents is inanely far reaching. Where are they going to be able to afford to live? On occasionally viewing the real estate listing of the Register, availability of space adequate, affordable housing for young families is sorely lacking and a more essential factor to be considered.

I do not support the Route 27 Redevelopment Plan and I hope there are others who do not as well.
