Most Edgecomb grade 7-12 students prefer Boothbay schools over other local options. During the Oct. 23 Edgecomb School Committee meeting, Superintendent Bob Kahler shared the school destinations for the 70 grade 7-12 tuition students. Fifty-five chose either Boothbay Region Elementary or High School.

The report showed 43 high school students selected Boothbay (32) as the top choice. Lincoln Academy was second with nine. Wiscasset and Waynflete followed with one each. For 27 grade 7-8 students, the vast majority (23) chose BRES. Two chose the Center for Teaching and Learning, a private school in town. One student selected Great Salt Bay, and another selected Woolwich Central.

In other action, the committee approved a revised Animals in School and Service Animals in School policies. Kahler reported the major change dealt with the definition of therapy and facility dogs. This year, the school has two facility dogs which can roam freely throughout the building, but the policy remains the same for therapy dogs, which would require constant supervision.

The committee approved three new hires. Ben Flynn was hired as an educational technician II. He began work Oct. 16. Connor Theroux was hired as an ed tech III. He begins work on Nov. 13. Matt Schmid was hired as a bus driver. He began work Nov. 1.

The committee held two executive sessions. The first dealt with negotiations regarding support staff’s expiring Aug. 31, 2024 contract. The second dealt with a personnel issue. The committee took no action following each session. The committee meets next at 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13 in the school cafeteria.
