Memorable Derby party

Dear Editor:

Oh, how I hate to pack away my Kentucky Derby hat! As I place it in the hat box, along with it goes some fond memories.

First of all, I would like to thank Debbie Graves for the inspired idea of a Kentucky Derby Party for the benefit of The Community Center. And secondly, the Rotarian women: Debbie Graves, Joy Ward and Irene Fowle for their vision and commitment to create one of the most fun fundraising events I have ever been involved with. It was hard work to set it all up but after that we had a party!

The members of the Rotary Club of Boothbay Harbor not only supported the idea of the party, they donned their Derby clothes and turned out in real style with hors d’oeuvres in hand. One of the highlights of the magical evening was Pam Utley’s rendition of “My Old Kentucky Home” with everyone joining in. The food was plentiful and beautifully presented. The Silent Auction Table had some of the most inviting and unusual items to entice the bidders. Guests had great fun betting on their favorite horse! There were two traditional Southern Punch Bowls and a full bar manned by Daren Graves and Linda Foster — champions of the mint julep. There were flowers galore and wonderful country music provided by Noel Arrington and Gabe Tonon. Visitors from Kentucky commented that it was the best planned Derby Party they had ever seen  right down to the Virginia peanuts.

The tickets to this collaborative effort between Rotary and The Community Center sold out in 10 days which makes us think that we should make this an annual event and look for a larger venue. As I pack my hat box away, I can still taste that wonderful mint julep!
