The Bath Police Department has arrested a 71-year-old man and charged him with reckless conduct with a firearm after he allegedly shot a gun inside his house during an argument.

According to a release from the Bath Police Department, Henry Cygan, 71, of Bath, was arrested Sunday, July 5, on Crawford Drive in Bath.

Police officers responded to the house at approximately 10 p.m. in response to a report of a handgun being fired inside the house.

When officers arrived, they reportedly found Cygan outside on the front steps of the house trying to get back into the house. In the report, it was noted that Cygan had a knife on him when police arrived, but that the gun, a 9mm handgun, was still inside the house. Cygan allegedly was using the knife to try and get back inside the house.

Cygan was taken into custody immediately by the Bath Police Department shortly after officers arrived.

According to the report, Cygan and a female relative had been arguing throughout the day; and at one point Cygan is alleged to have gone into his bedroom and retrieved the gun. He allegedly fired in the living room of the house and the bullet is reported to have gone in the direction of Crawford Drive. No one was injured or struck by the bullet.

After allegedly firing the gun, Cygan went outside to see if the bullet struck his truck, which was parked in the driveway. The relative shut and locked the door with Cygan outside and dialed 9-1-1. The police arrived shortly thereafter and placed Cygan in custody and eventually under arrest.

Cygan was charged with class C reckless conduct with a firearm, which is a felony. He was taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset where he was still in custody as of 3 p.m. Monday, July 6, on $500 cash bail. According to jail officials, it is Cygan's first time at Two Bridges Regional Jail.

He will have a court date Sept. 15 at the New Meadows Court in West Bath.
