Longtime librarian retiring
After more than 25 years of service, Linda Barter, to the dismay of many, is saying goodbye to the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library and turning in her name badge on Friday, Aug. 30. Barter has run the circulation department at the Library since 1985.
It is a point of amazement for that Barter most often doesn’t even need to see a patron’s library card … she knows many of them by heart.
“I just absorbed all these numbers over the years and when I see a face at the desk their card number pops up in my mind, especially with our most frequent Library users,” said Barter.
But it’s her gentle way of making everyone feel welcome that most distinguishes Barter.
“Everyone that comes in I feel deserves a welcoming atmosphere, and a smile does that better than anything,” she said.
Barter has trained and supervised hundreds of volunteers over the years and they all love her.
“The place just won’t be the same without her. It’s almost like the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library and Linda are the same thing!” long-time volunteer Sue Kreahling said.
“When I began as director of the library in July of last year right in the middle of the busy summer season Linda was there to help me get through those hectic early days. I knew, with the wealth of knowledge she had gathered over the years, that I didn’t have to worry about the circulation department. But it was her unassuming, affable way that I most appreciated, and will miss,” Director Tim McFadden said.
When asked about her time at the library, Barter said, “It’s been a privilege to serve the community at the Library. I’ve made so many friends over the years and I’ll miss it very much. Still, I’m also looking forward to beginning a whole new life. But the library will always be a part of me no matter where I go or what I do.”
Best wishes for a happy and fulfilling retirement go with Barter from everyone at the Library, staff, volunteers and patrons. An informal retirement party will be held at the Library on August 30 at 4:30 p.m. Anyone who has known Linda over the years is welcome. Refreshments will be served.
