Local police move up timeframe of Gold/Smith Gallery burglary

Tue, 10/02/2012 - 9:00am

It's been two weeks since the burglary at Gold/Smith Gallery on Commercial Street in Boothbay Harbor. On October 1, Police Chief Bob Hasch said the department suspects activity may have begun earlier than 2:51 a.m. on September 19.

“We are looking to speak to anyone who was in the area around 2 a.m.,” Hasch said. “We continue to work on this investigation daily and have coordinated our information with other agencies and have some avenues to follow.”

The police department has also sent information to NESPIN, the New England State Police Information Network.

Karen Vander established the gallery of art and jewelry 40 years ago, which features her husband John Vander's paintings and works of other notable artists both in the states and abroad.

Now the artistic business she has spent decades building is severely damaged; not only was Vander "cleaned out," she was also uninsured.

Even if the couple were insured, some of the pieces of stolen jewelry were of Karen's own designs created over the last 35 years.

The thieves also made off with all the special orders placed by customers, including wedding bands; beads and other materials. In the process of illegally entering the gallery, the burglar(s) also broke the jeweler's torches.

According to the Boothbay Harbor Police Department. Officer Larry Brown was on the scene in less than three minutes' time. The burglar(s) had thrown the bench that sits in front of the left side picture window through the window to enter the business.

Brown was later joined by Police Chief Bob Hasch, Sergeant Pat Higgins and Officer Jared Mitkus.

The police are still asking community members for help. Anyone that may have heard or seen anything suspicious between 2 and 3 a.m. on Wednesday, September 19, should contact Lead Investigator Brown, Chief Hasch or Sgt. Higgins at 633-2451 or 633-5616.
