Library changes on the way
Following last year's successful challenge, in which $200,000 was raised for various library improvements, the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library (BHML) Board of Trustees is completing the design phase for upgrades to the building.
In past years, the trustees and executive directors have struggled to find space for new books, staff operations and public activities. Working with Tor Glendinning, architect from 44Degrees North-Architecture in Damariscotta, the photo shows the expected new look of the library from the parking area on Howard Street.
The changes will include a small addition into the parking lot without impacting the number of parking spaces. The first floor will be rearranged to provide a public handicapped-accessible restroom, a larger circulation desk area, a bigger director’s office and a stairway to the second floor. The stack space for books will be increased and rearranged allowing the aisles to be accessible for patrons in wheel chairs.
The Great Room (with the fireplace), will be unchanged except for improved lighting and improved artwork display areas. Desktop computers will be rearranged throughout the library.
Historically, the second floor has been suitable only for storage. The anticipated changes will add a code compliant stairway, making the second floor usable for public meetings, staff offices and eventually, a room for teen activities.
These changes represent only the first of three phases for the property which includes the Hyde House where the used book store is located. Phase 2 will be replacement of the small shed behind the Hyde House with a larger building for sorting and storing used books, and completion of the second floor space. Phase 3 may include an elevator to serve both buildings via a second floor walkway connector.
The trustees expect that some additional fund-raising will be necessary to complete each phase. They are hoping construction of Phase 1 can begin this fall and be completed by the spring of 2014.
A public presentation of the plans is scheduled for April 16, at 7 p.m. in the Library Great Room. All are invited.
