Leave Woodend Fund alone

Dear Editor:

I do not support offsetting the town of Edgecomb's tax liability by taking any funds from the Woodend Fund. The Woodend Fund was approved by the taxpayers to be used for future shorefront access. It seems the issue with lack of surplus is caused by not setting the tax rate properly.

The town’s revenue has not matched the expenses. The board of selectmen has stated that the surplus has been depleted by additional winter road needs and a special town meeting. The budget for the town needs to be controlled by the board of selectmen.

We are fortunate in our town to support a wonderful education, fire protection, public land and roads. With proper budgeting and the board of selectmen setting the tax rate properly, the revenue from property taxes, excise taxes and  other sources should be sufficient to cover the town expenses and replenish the surplus account.

As a taxpayer, the last thing I want to see is increased property taxes. But now that we must support all that we have in town, the board of selectmen has no other choice but to adjust the tax rate to cover expenses or begin the painful task of reducing the amount of services offered.

I hope all Edgecomb taxpayers understand the importance of voting May 15 and attending the town meeting May 16.
