Top 10 senior Karl Alamo has put in close to 1,000 hours in community service during his time at Boothbay Region High School.

“I want to help others as much as I possibly can,” Alamo said. “It's one of the reasons I'm going into pre-med.”

Alamo, the son of Charito and Dr. Aquilino Alamo, is attending the University of Rhode Island in the fall. He's majoring in cell and molecular biology on the pre-med track, and will be studying in the honors program. He says he is passionate about science.

“I was originally planning on going to the University of Connecticut,” Alamo said. “But URI gave me a really good offer, the best one, and after visiting all the colleges I was accepted to I liked the general feel of their campus the best.”

He is a member of the outing club, yearbook club and drama club, and is a member of both the BRHS band and the Boothbay Region Alumni Community Band.

He was on the varsity swim teams both his junior and seniors years (captain of the boys team his senior year) and qualified for states both years. In his freshman and sophomore years, before BRHS had a swim team, he swam with the YMCA Dolphin swim team. He was also on the track and field and cross-country teams, which won the state regional championship and Mountain Valley Conference this past year.

Alamo spent his senior year as student body president, his junior year as class treasurer, and his freshman year as class president.

Last year Alamo was the president of the YMCA Leader's Club. This year he was asked by Andy Hamblett and Peggy Pinkham to be a youth representative on the YMCA Board of Trustees (the other is junior Hannah Morley). He has continued to be an adviser to the Leaders Club as well.

Alamo has received the Dartmouth Book Award, Certificates of Honor for Spanish, computer graphics programming and band, is a member of the National Honor Society, is on the All Conference Academic Cross County Team: All Academic, and the All-Star Swimming Team.

Alamo is currently involved with the school spring musical, “High School Musical on Stage!” as one of the leads and says he's having a “fantastic time.”

When asked what he wants to do with his life, Alamo says he wants to “find a good job and live a happy life.”
