BRHS Graduates on the Move

Kameron Markee studying sports management at Johnson and Wales

The Paul Coulombe Scholarship, one of the Boothbay Region Student Aid Fund’s 60 “Named” scholarships, was recently awarded to college sophomore Kameron Markee, who is studying sports entertainment and event management at Providence, Rhode Island’s Johnson and Wales University. A graduate of Boothbay Region High School in 2013, Markee spent his freshman year as an undeclared major at Husson College in Bangor, where he earned a solid 3.2 grade point average.

Upon graduating from the BRHS, Markee planned to attend a college near Boothbay and, just as he did in high school, play football. However, he experienced something of an epiphany at Husson. Rather than making football his priority, Markee requested a redshirt, focused on academics, and set for himself a new priority of becoming a sports lawyer.

Fortunately, Johnson and Wales' sports management program has a pre-law track.

Intrigued by the movie, "Jerry McGuire," Kameron expresses doubts about the ethical standards of many sports lawyers. He fears that many who handle contracts, set up charities, and provide legal advice to young professional athletes lack professionalism. Markee aspires to lead the reform.

“I have a passion for doing what’s right and helping others,” Markee said. Since Johnson and Wales lacks a football program, Markee sees his next touchdown in the courtroom.

While the Coulombe Fund targets students interested in business, its donor, Paul Coulombe, a successful businessman who summers on Southport, is also interested in encouraging hard working students, like Markee, who believe in themselves and exhibit an unyielding determination to succeed in their chosen careers.

The Boothbay Region Student Aid Fund recently completed its 2014 annual fund drive. However, it always welcomes financial support. Contributions to the BRSAF can be sent to P.O. Box 293, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538. For more information on the BRSAF, go to www.boothbayharborstudentaidfund.org.
