Juniper-McKown Point Column: More visitors arrive

Tue, 07/29/2014 - 12:30pm

Last Saturday's JPVIS annual meeting certainly earned its purpose to keep us all informed of the news, happenings, and future and present plans for our community. It was also a good time to visit and catch up with of all our local friends and neighbors.

A date this week that we all need to pencil in red on our calendars is Saturday, Aug. 2 at 7:30 p.m. Many residents will be able to enjoy an evening of square dancing at our community house.

Our tennis program is alive, well and busy. We all need to order good weather so they can continue with their active schedule. The JPVIS juniors will be going to Dolphin Saturday, Aug. 9 for the exhibition from 10 a.m. to noon. We are still looking for housing for a couple of the guest pros. If anyone has any ideas or available space in their cottage, please contact Dave, our tennis pro.

On August 5 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the JPVIS junior tennis team will play against the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club. On Thursday, Aug. 14 we will host the Christmas Cove juniors for another match from 4 to 6 p.m. There also is another USTA sanctioned tournament in Rockport on August 16. Sign ups can be through Dave or online. Please also stay tuned for upcoming JPVIS adult and junior tennis tournaments. The junior tournaments (boys and girls singles and mixed doubles) will be held the week of August 11. Adult tournament schedules are still to be determined. People can see Dave for more information.

The Gillies family are all over the point. Chris and Kim have been staying in the Dilley upper cottage for the month of July. Daughters Zoe and Christie are both working in town for the summer. Zoe is waiting tables at the Bridge Street Cafe and Christie is scooping ice cream at the Ice Cream Factory where she and her sister created a best selling flavor appropriately named Juniper Point. Kim is helping Chris' mom, Judy, bring in boats at Judy's Marina downtown. John and Patti Gillies are in George Whitten's house for the summer, and daughter Cathy just arrived from St. Louis with her family, husband Brian, daughter Emily and sons Evan and Brodie. They brought along cousin Matthew and will be spending a week in the Sylvester cottage. Everyone is excited to be back in their favorite place to make more happy memories together.

Another date we should put on our calendar is August 3 at 2 p.m., when we can celebrate the life of our late neighbor and friend Jane Stevenson. The memorial service will be held at the Congregational Church at 2 and will be followed by a reception in O'Connell's field.

Anne Dooley will be writing the Juniper Point column for the August 7 and 14 editions of the Register. So please send her your news next week. The Barnes will spend the first week of August in Boston with Holly and grandkids. During that time please welcome Rich and Beverly Preiser who will occupy our cottage for the first week of August. Rich is a professor at Harvard and a frequent visitor to our area. They occupied our cottage last August as well when we were in France and loved our Point and the surrounding area.
