A memorial service will be held this spring in Boothbay Harbor for Jean Carolyn Blake McVicker, 81, who died Nov. 17, 2014 at the Gregory Wing at St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor, where she spent her last few years.

Jean was born May 18, 1933 to Arthur and Virginia Blake of Boothbay Harbor, where she grew up with her siblings, Dorothy Patton, Jane "Ann" Blanks, Arthur "Lee" Blake (deceased) and Jill Corea (Robert).

As a young wife and mother, she moved to Somerville, New Jersey, where she worked at Somerset Hospital and later at John Wiley Publishers. Jean served as a Cub Scouts den mother and was a member of the Somerville Fire Department's Ladies Auxiliary. When the family moved to Stratford, New Jersey, she worked at Lit Brothers Department Store as a post-mastectomy lingerie specialist. She worked at Blackstar & Frost Jewelers when she lived in Houston, Texas.

Returning to the Boothbay region, she worked at Key Bank and achieved a dream of owning a house "at home." Jean joined the Boothbay Harbor Methodist Church, where she worked for some time as secretary. Many summer visitors to the region recall her as the gracious and knowledgeable lady behind the desk at Rocktide Inn.

Jean loved to sing — in musicals, in the Methodist Church choir, in the Sheepscot Chorus, and whenever the opportunity presented itself. Her adventures included auto trips to Canada just to have lunch, and frequent treks to the Indy 500, where she was thrilled to drive her own car on the track. She's remembered for her adventuresome spirit and her sense of humor.

Jean is survived by her children, Michael (Karen), Steven (Nancy), Cheryl Perry (Robert), and Allen; her grandchildren, Taryn (Brian), Trevor, Brittney and William; one great-grandchild, Zoe Luna Kearsley; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and many wonderful, caring friends.

The spring service for Jean will be announced.

Friends wishing to honor Jean's memory may make a donation to St. Jude's Hospital for Children (www.stjude.org), or to the Alzheimer's Association (www.alr.org/join_the_cause_donate.asp).
