Jazz music at Blueberry Festival

Thu, 08/09/2012 - 12:00pm

Foot-tapping music will once again fill the Darrows Barn to entertain those seeking out the home baked goods, 400 quarts of freshly harvested blueberries and hand sewn fabric items at the third annual Blueberry Festival & Harvest Fair on Saturday, Aug. 11, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Round Top Farm on Business Route 1 in Damariscotta.

The free family oriented community event includes arts and crafts vendors, children’s activities and food hot off the grille. There will be hot coffee to go with blueberry pastries and places to sit in the barn while enjoying music.

Dr. Jeff Grosser and friends will begin the festivities with jazz style tunes featuring his plectrum banjo. A former professional accordionist who has performed at Carnegie Hall, he is a retired Wiscasset dentist. A multi-instrumentalist, Grosser took up the banjo in the '60s and played in many New York City clubs, including the Red Onion. He did road work for Your Father’s Mustache and was the regular partner with the late great stride pianist George Holmes. He worked for superstars Ed Sullivan, Jerry Lewis, and Sammy Davis Jr. in the banjo busy '60s and '70s and now leads The Razcals Jazz Band and the The Ragtime Razcals of New England. He is the regular banjoist with the very well respected long standing Royal River Philharmonic Jazz Band.

The sponsoring Midcoast Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will have some Silent Auction items in the barn as well as special picnic baskets for sale. There is plenty of free parking at Round Top, a community facility owned by the Damariscotta River Association.
