He said, she said in Damariscotta baby assault case
A Damariscotta woman and her ex-boyfriend gave differing accounts of an incident that led to her being charged with assaulting their 11-month-old daughter, according to a police statement.
A Lincoln County grand jury indicted Rebecca E. Debella, 25, on January 15 with a Class C count of assault and a Class D count of endangering the welfare of a child. The indictment alleges the incident took place November 2, 2012, in Damariscotta.
Debella is out on $1,000 cash bail and has been ordered not to have contact with the alleged victim, her daughter Ali Robinson, now a 1-year-old.
Damariscotta Police Officer Aaron Beck heard two different versions of what happened to the little girl.
The child's father, Keith Robinson (Debella's ex-boyfriend), said Debella threw the child onto a couch, then kicked her in the face; Debella denied throwing and kicking their child, according to Beck's report on file in Lincoln County Superior Court.
Debella described the incident by saying she tossed the girl onto the couch and pushed her with her foot, wrote Beck, who recently joined the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department as a deputy.
The child was transported to a hospital following the incident. She had a small bruise on her face, Beck's report states.
Assistant District Attorney Jonathan Liberman declined to comment January 24 when asked about the child's current physical condition. He also declined to say who is caring for her at this time.
Debella is currently trying to get her bail conditions amended to let her have contact with her daughter.
A hearing on the request is set for 8:30 a.m. January 31 in Lincoln County Superior Court.
Debella is also scheduled to be arraigned at that time. She will plead not guilty to the charges, her lawyer Philip Cohen said January 24.
“There are definitely questions as to whether this rose to the level of an assault,” Cohen said.
