Is Gorbachev correct?

Dear Editor:

About two hundred years ago, Marx and others began convincing us that WE created God, rather than the other way around, and that may well have been the beginning of the end for classical Western Civilization, a culture that the Catholic Church spent one thousand years building, for better or worse.

Let me give you a "Miller Analogy" that I happen to believe: God is to Humanity, as Religion is to Culture. I recently watched a National Geographic documentary called "Nazi Scrapbook from Hell," and it showed the Auschwitz SS men and women socializing, eating, drinking, laughing, and dancing during off hours, and gassing 8,000 Jews per day while at work, and the host kept asking "How can human beings look and act so human, and be so inhumane at the same time." To me, the answer involves the vast power of what is called Culture, particularly if it is a virulently evil culture like Nazism, or Socialism (note the big S), or ... fill in the blanks.

I am afraid that Mr. Gorbachev might be on the right track to surmise that the "civilized" world is headed for World War III. In fact, the way things are going, I’m beginning to think that it may have already begun, on 9/11/2001.
