Hannah Morley, a senior at Boothbay Region High School, has been getting a lot of pats on the back lately.

Most recently she has been in the news, locally and statewide, as the co-captain of the Boothbay Region High School girls basketball team, who just won the Class C South championship.

In February Morley was awarded the Maine Principals Award, and was named to the McDonald's Senior All-Star and the All-Star Senior Academic teams.

Morley is the senior class president and salutatorian; a member of the student council and president of the Interact Club, a youth group of the Rotary Club; President of the YMCA Leaders Club; and a student representative on the YMCA Board of Trustees. In 2015, Morley was honored as the Boothbay Region YMCA Youth of the Year, and she was chosen as a delegate to Girls State and went to Washington, D.C. as a delegate to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders.

And now Morley has been named the April/May honoree of the Channel 6 Maine Teens Who Care award.

Officer Larry Brown of the Boothbay Harbor Police Department, and school resource officer at the high school since 2009, nominated Morley for the honor.

In his nomination letter to Channel 6, Brown shared some of his thoughts about the girl he has known since grammar school.

“(Hannah) has been very active in both school and community organizations throughout her life. Academically Hannah is a high honor student and an outstanding athlete in cross country, varsity basketball and track. No matter what the event is at school, you will find Hannah very enthusiastic and involved.

“The composure that this young lady has is just extraordinary. If there was ever a kid who deserved this, it's Hannah. I hope that other kids will look at her as a role model and say, ‘Wow — look at what Hannah has done.’ She is not one to go out and blow her own horn. She's just doing these things because she wants to.”

High School Principal Dan Welch contributed a supporting letter of recommendation about Morley to Channel 6. “She is one of the finest young adults I have encountered in my career as an administrator and educator,” he said. “Hannah … is one of the kindest and most empathetic students I have encountered.”

Girls basketball coach Tanner Grover wrote of Morley's initiative in developing the Future Seahawks program “... to help generate interest and excitement in the sport that she has grown to love.” He went on to say, “Hannah prioritizes the “We” over the “Me.” In a day and age where people are so consumed by self-promotion, Hannah's approach to athletics and to life is genuinely refreshing.”

Morley's cross country and track and field coach Nicholas Scott and Executive Director of the local YMCA Andy Hamblett, also weighed in.

“Hannah Morley is held in high esteem by her teachers, coaches and peers and will be missed immensely next year,” Scott said.

Hamblett said of Morley, “She is the type of individual that I would want for an employee, mentor for our youth, and a role model for my own children.”

Channel 6 Community Relations Director Debbie Sample said there are often 20 students to choose from for each award. “We have a group that reviews the nominations and makes the choice.” A $2,000 scholarship is awarded to all Teens Who Care honorees.

Morley has a lot on her plate right now. She's gearing up for the the Class C girls state championship game on Saturday. With all that's going on in her life it's probably hard for Morley to process it all. “I'm just really happy about it,” she said of her Teens Who Care award. Of Larry Brown she said, “He's awesome.”

In conclusion, Officer Brown wrote in his letter of nomination for Morley, “... I have seen many exemplary students whose academics, athletics and community involvement have been noteworthy. Without question if I was asked to choose one student most deserving of your ‘Teens Who Care’ award, without hesitation I would say Hannah Morley.”

Hannah Morley is the daughter of Andrew and Sarah Morley, and big sister of Nicholas.

The spots will start April 1 on WCSH.
