Expect 8-10 inches of fluffy
From July 1 to December 31, 2013, Portland had 26.7 inches of snow, which was 11 inches more than the average of 15.7 inches.
Expect more of the same for the new year.
The Midcoast will get between eight and 10 inches of snow and less than that in temperatures, as temperature totals for Thursday, Jan. 2 are expected to hover around zero, National Weather Service Meteorologist Margaret Curtis said.
“It's going to be awfully cold, snowy and windy,” she said.
The snow will pick up in the afternoon and continue until approximately 10 a.m. Friday, Curtis said.
“The good news is that the snow will be light and fluffy and easy to move around,” she said. “So easy, in fact, that the wind will blow it all around. We can expect winds around 25 miles per hour with gusts up to 35.”
That wind will also take the temperature and cause it to plunge; Curtis said the Midcoast can expect wind chill temperatures of -20 F tonight.
“Further down the coast we're watching the tides,” Curtis said. “In your area, if anyone is actually thinking of taking a boat out in this, they can expect gales, strong winds and freezing spray. Basically, a generally unpleasant day.”
