Edgecomb selectmen will discuss Route 1 plan tonight

Mon, 04/21/2014 - 11:00am

Lincoln County Planner Bob Faunce will be talking with Edgecomb selectmen at the board’s Monday, April 21 meeting.

Faunce will be discussing the Midcoast Route 1 Corridor Management Plan (CMP).

According to Faunce, in 2005 The Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT) asked Lincoln County Commissioners to identify “corridors of regional economic significance.”

The MDOT was hoping to create a process that would allow local officials to come up with plans to make recommendations for future improvements.

An overview on the Lincoln County Regional Planning Commission's website describes the plan: “This corridor management plan summarizes municipal and regional transportation, land use, economy, housing, and natural and scenic resources.”

According to Faunce, the term “corridor” includes modes of transportation such as rail, air, bus, bike and pedestrian (sidewalks and trails). “The plan could include recommendations for road improvements and sidewalks as well as bike and pedestrian facilities,” he said.

Midcoast towns included in the plan are Edgecomb, Newcastle, Damariscotta, Nobleboro and Waldoboro.

Once the plans have been approved by all the towns, they will be sent to the MDOT, where they will be referenced when the department plans future improvements.

“CMPs for Damariscotta, Newcastle and Waldoboro, with minor additions, have been approved and Nobleboro will have another meeting before approval,” Faunce said. “The last one is Edgecomb.”

Faunce is hoping to get an endorsement from Edgecomb selectmen at tonight's meeting. The meeting is at Edgecomb Town Hall at 6 p.m. and is open to the public.
