Edgecomb Eddy ranks highest among elementary schools in the Boothbay region
The first report cards on Maine schools for the academic year 2011-2012 were released on the afternoon of May 1 by the Department of Education. Here's how the Boothbay region scored:
Edgecomb Eddy School: A
Boothbay Region Elementary School: B
Boothbay Region High School: C
Southport Central School: B
Grades were based on data assessing student achievement, growth in achievement and the improved performance of the bottom 25 percent of students; high school graduation rates; math and reading proficiency scores in the New England Comprehensive Assessment Program for grades three through eight, and proficiency on SATs. 53 percent of high school graduates perform below the proficiency rates.
The report cards are the result of Gov. Paul LePage's initiative to inform parents and communities about how well the schools are educating students.
An article released by the Maine Department of Education reported the majority of the state's elementary and high schools were average or above: 69 percent of the 124 high schools and 81 percent of the 422 elementary schools received grades A, B or C. The overall state grade for both elementary and high schools was a C.
