Dumpster fire at YMCA extinguished
UPDATE: Fire Chief Nick Upham said later Thursday that the fire started "most likely from smoking material. Perhaps a cigarette was dropped in the dumpster, smoldered and ignited the paper in the dumpster because the wind was just right to do that."
ORIGINAL POST: A fire in a dumpster located between Boothbay Region YMCA’s field house and the Child Enrichment Center on Townsend Avenue was extinguished within 30 minutes by Boothbay Harbor firefighters Thursday, July 24.
The call on the fire was around 12:35 p.m. and within minutes, three BHFD fire trucks arrived at the scene.
Fire Chief Nick Upham helped hook up the hoses along with some of the firefighters. Firefighters Jesse Peters and Nick Greenleaf began spraying water in the dumpster, as fire and smoke rose skyward.
Police Chief Doug Snyder arrived to help with traffic control while the fire was being fought.
The dumpster was being used by the construction crew remodeling the Child Enrichment Center.
More information on the fire will be announced.
