Don’t support the Supplemental Budget

Mon, 03/04/2024 - 3:15pm

Dear Editor:

I write with great concern regarding the Governor’s Supplemental Budget which proposes cuts to Maine’s expanded Medicare Savings Programs (MSPs). These cuts will undermine the expanded eligibility for MSPs passed by this legislature in 2023.

MSPs are joint federal/state programs for people on Medicare who have limited income and resources. MSPs help qualified beneficiaries pay for their Medicare costs, which can include Medicare Part A (hospital insurances) and Medicare Part B (medical insurance) deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. Some beneficiaries, called “dual eligibles” also qualify for full Medicaid benefits.

Under the law passed in 2023, people 65and older with incomes up to $27,681 would save $7,300, and people with incomes between $27,682 and $36,450 would save $2,000 on Medicare costs.Despite growing over time, enrollment in MSPs remains stubbornly low. We should be expanding the availability of this program, not shrinking it. By advancingenrollment in the program, people will be more motivated to be proactive with their healthcare, which, in turn, will help reduce future health risks and reduce costs.

To our legislators I say this: Please don’t support the current Supplemental Budget proposal and roll back the expansion of the Medicare Savings Programs passed last year. This is of paramount importance to thousands of at-risk Mainers.
