Does school size matter?

Wed, 11/08/2023 - 12:00pm

Dear Editor:

Does size matter? Can a high school be too small? Can a high school be too large?  Research indicates that high schools of 400-500 students, for a variety of reasons, variables, and economics are the most successful. At this size, they can maintain their intentional culture and a coherent curriculum.

As a community we have to ask ourselves, what is best for our youth in the region? This might mean stepping back and taking a look at other options.

As a community, have we heard or investigated the possibility of a regional high school? Should we hear both sides of the story before making any decision? Once we commit to building a “new” high school, the door is closed to any other options.

I heard it said, “Our failure to build a new high school compromises our kids' education.”  I disagree with such generalizations. Have we been compromising their education for years in an aging high school in need of system repairs and upgrades? I think not. Our dedicated teachers continue to teach and educate. I believe research, conversation, and consideration of what a regional school can offer  may be far more beneficial for our students when considering their  holistic  high school experience both curricular and extra-curricular. From academics to  athletics, to visual and performing arts, high school students need greater diversity and social interaction. Perhaps they could be meeting and interacting with kids from Alna, Whitefield, Dresden, Wiscasset, Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Edgcomb and Southport. A regional school can provide greater opportunities in many areas. Full team strength, viable extra-curricular activities and clubs. It is my understanding that many teams, of late, have not fielded sufficient numbers at both Wiscasset and Boothbay Region high schools. Across the board, many are feeling the impact from declining school populations. Clubs, extracurricular activities,  broader curriculum offerings included.

The following is from the 2022 BRHS Mission Statement for students:

  • Think critically and creatively to solve problems and develop diverse perspectives.
  • Work independently and collaboratively to complete purposeful and challenging tasks.

As the adults, let's walk the walk and not just talk the talk.
